2023 NSF- Sponsored Climate, Sustainability & Quantum Computing Workshop

Join us for the 2023 Climate, Sustainability and Quantum Computing Workshop, being hosted at GE’s research campus in Niskayuna, NY, on Wednesday, October 4 and Thursday, October 5, 2023

Supported by the Convergence Accelerator Program in the Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP) at the National Science Foundation (NSF), this workshop will gather top quantum and climate change experts from government, industry, academia, and other non-profit and philanthropic organizations to explore the near term potential benefits quantum computing could bring to sustainability and addressing climate change.

While there is great interest in understanding  the future development roadmap for quantum computing capabilities, including the number and quality of qubits and improvements in algorithms, the overriding focus of this workshop will be to answer which applications related to climate change and sustainability would most benefit today and in the near term from quantum computing. These include efforts in chemistry, optimization, modeling, and forecasting.

The types of quantum programs being considered will focus on improving algorithms that can achieve computational advantages in the near-term Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) regime. These programs will engage several key disciplines, including QC algorithm and hardware development and their counterparts in classical computing. A key consideration will be exploring the efficacy of a new computational paradigm based on quantum computing and its potential to solve problems related to climate change, sustainability and renewable energy transition that are computationally infeasible classically. 

An Opportunity to frame ideas and assist the NSF in developing topics to be funded

A key goal of the workshop will be to outline a clear vision and roadmap for applying quantum in sustainability that helps inform the development of future programs. By attending, you will have the opportunity to help shape new program ideas to address some of the most difficult challenges related to climate change. 

The outcome of this workshop will be a report that captures key findings and recommendations. The final report will be shared with NSF to assist them in selecting future research track topics for the Convergence Accelerator program.
