Today, GE Indonesia employs 800+ local staff, with our headquarters located in Jakarta.

Future of Flight

Every 48 seconds, a GE powered airplane takes off from Indonesia, where GE has installed over 600 highly efficient jet engines on Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air, connecting the islands and contributing to trade and tourism in Indonesia and transporting 44 million passengers a year from the Soekarno-Hatta International airport in Jakarta.

Energy Transition

GE is a major player in Indonesia’s power generation, and our local customers include state-owned power utility, PLN, as well as Medco Power and Cikarang Listrindo. GE has more than 180 units of gas turbines installed, utilizing natural and non-natural gas fuels, and generating an equivalent of 26% of Indonesia’s total electricity. In the renewable space, some of GE’s installed bases include the largest hydro turbine for the Jatiluhur hydro power plant in West Java.

One of GE’s hallmark projects in Indonesia include 20 mobile power plants for PT PLN Batam, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state-owned utility company, PT PLN Persero, which was installed in eight different locations and achieved commercial operations within six-eight months. The 500MW project is a flagship of the GE Store, combining GE’s offerings across its Power, Grid Solutions, and Water businesses. In total, the plants provide the much-needed electricity to power over 4 million Indonesian homes with 50% fewer emissions, and create jobs for 2,300 locals. In February 2022, we successfully completed the PLTGU Riau IPP 275MW combined cycle power plant for Medco Ratch Power Riau (MRPR) — the most efficient thermal power plant in Sumatra island, providing flexible and clean power to the Sumatra Grid.

Today, more than ever, GE is committed to accelerating Indonesia’s energy transition through digital solutions and grid modernization. GE Grid Solutions Indonesia is a leading and trusted partner of PLN as the national transmission operator offers a broad range of products and solutions. Our local capabilities span the manufacturing and testing of HV products, such as the Power transformer, Air & Gas Insulation Switchgear in Unindo Factory (a joint PLN venture) — a demonstration of GE’s commitment to local talent and development, as well as transfer technology. A recent key project is the Sepatan & Teluk Naga Digital Substation, a 150 kV digital pilot project in Indonesia. By utilizing 100% local engineers, the GE-PLN digital substation serves to strengthen local capacity-building efforts, while streamlining cable usage, reducing carbon footprint by 30% and extending facility lifetime by 15%.

Partnerships & People Development

Continuous Learning and Development

GE cooperates with government, customers, universities, and NGOs as part of its commitment to develop Indonesia’s local talent. Each year, GE trains and equips more than 200 local employees with customer engagement programs, sharing of best practices, and campus activities.

We signed an executive university partnership with Institute Technology Bandung (ITB) in 2013, to provide leadership development mentoring programs for the students and graduate talent recruitment, as well as conduct technology research. That same year, we started an ongoing learning program with some of our key customers, such as Garuda Indonesia, Pertamina, and PLN, to develop a Learning and Technology Center. The center serves as an institute for learning, leadership, and engineering, and consolidates GE’s existing activities with partners, to be shared as a resource with other customers.

Building Indonesia’s Supplier Ecosystem

Our Turbine Services facility in Bandung, PT GE Nusantara Turbine Service (PT GENTS), is recognized globally as a GE Centre of Excellence Global Repair shop for B/E class gas turbines. 80% of the components that are repaired in the facility are from customers in EMEA and the Americas, and 80% of consumable parts used for repairs are sourced locally. These facilities have also generated jobs for over 1,300 Indonesians, employed either directly by GE or by our vendors, as part of our international supply chain.

Investing in Communities

GE Indonesia is well recognized and has received several awards for our contribution to the local community. Among these are:

• The “MURI” Indonesia record for the highest number of women examined in a one-day pregnancy and maternal health drive in Palembang
• The “Millennium Development Award,” which was awarded twice — first, in 2008 for a financial literacy program that aids disadvantaged women; and again in 2012 for a piping project to provide clean drinking water for Yogyakarta villages after the volcanic eruption of Mt Merapi.

We also partner with customers on various citizenship activities. In 2012, GE partnered with Garuda Indonesia to renovate an early education facility in Lombok Island in eastern Indonesia. We have also run community initiatives to improve the quality and access to healthcare in rural areas in Indonesia, such as the Pencerah Nusantara, which mobilized 64 healthcare professionals to provide quality healthcare for over 264,000 citizens, in 14 remote locations across Indonesia.

Our local GE Volunteers Network has contributed over 16,000 volunteer hours in supporting various community initiatives across the country. These include supporting Jhpiego’s Expanding Maternal and Newborn Survival (EMAS) program in developing the use of mobile technology for postpartum and postnatal care for new mothers, partnering Habitat for Humanity Indonesia to rebuild parts of Aceh and Yogyakarta after natural disasters; and donating lighting and equipment to the 12th century Borobudur and Prambanan temples — as part of a wider initiative to conserve and enhance the beauty of the UNESCO’s world Heritage Site.
