About

GE was first established in New Zealand in 1982. Today, GE is made up of two tier one businesses: aviation and power, all underpinned by digital technology. GE employees across New Zealand are dedicated to turning imaginative ideas into leading products and services that help solve some of the world's toughest problems.

Businesses
We operate across a number of business sectors in New Zealand

Aviation

Since we developed America's first jet engine in 1942, GE has continued to drive innovation in aircraft and engine technology, making breakthrough advances in engine fuel-efficiency and reliability.  GE and its customers are working together to unlock new opportunities to grow and deliver more productivity in aviation, harnessing large streams of data for incredible insights and real operational value for customers.

GE Aviation's presence in New Zealand dates to over 18 years ago when it deployed the first Required Navigation Performance (RNP) systems in 2004. Since then, GE Aviation has worked with Air New Zealand to deploy digital solutions that reduce fuel consumption, track miles and CO2 emissions.

GE Aviation has been supplying jet engines to Air New Zealand for many years, including its former B777 fleet.  This engine supply relationship was recently expanded when in May 2019 Air New Zealand announced the $US2.7 billion investment in a fleet of eight new Boeing (B787-10) Dreamliners to replace its B777-200s.  The Dreamliners will be powered with GEnx-1B engines, with options to supply an additional 20 Dreamliner aircraft over time.

Power

GE Gas Power Solutions have been providing gas and hydro powered generation to New Zealand for many years, with projects including the huge 360MW GT26 combined cycle unit at Taranaki and more recently the series of LM6000’s at Todd Energy’s New Plymouth plants.  The LM6000 fast start 50MW gas powered generators are a perfect fit for New Zealand’s peak demand requirements that are needed to support a large renewable base load.

GE Hydro Services supports a growing list of New Zealand generation customers as they upgrade and optimize their existing hydro assets. Recent projects include refurbishments at hydro stations Lake Coleridge Power Station in the South Island and Whakamaru Power Station in the North Island.

GE Digital’s technologies were deployed by Transpower in 1996 to manage the new wholesale electricity market and the New Zealand national grid. New Zealand was the first country in the world to deploy the market management systems which are still in operation today and successfully manage a complex array of renewable energy resources on the grid. Other Digital technologies have also been deployed in New Zealand, including:

  • In the mid to late 2000s, New Zealand electricity network providers WEL Networks, Orion Networks, and Aurora, implemented GE’s Automated Distribution Management System (ADMS) technology to improve power reliability for consumers and enables new distributed energy resources to be deployed. GE's outage management software will also help these network companies reduce the frequency of outages and quickly restore power when they do occur. These projects support the New Zealand government's goal of carbon neutrality and generating 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035.
  • Between 2018 and 2022 GE Digital’s business extended its ADMS deployments by adding four new distribution network companies, including Vector, to its growing New Zealand distribution network portfolio. GE’s ADMS provide operators with better information to support decision making on the network, especially during storm response and major incidents.

GE Grid Solutions, enabling the energy transition, serves customers globally with over 17,000 employees in approximately 80 countries. In today’s age of accelerating energy transition, the reliability, security and efficiency of the grid remain paramount. Grid Solutions helps enable utilities and industry to effectively manage electricity from the point of generation to the point of consumption. GE Grid Solutions has been supplying equipment and services to many New Zealand utilities for the past 20 years.
